Welcome to the latest episode of Movie Review Talk with Scott Mantz! On this episode, Scott, Claudia Puig, and Erik Davis are discussing three new releases – Green Book, Roma, The Favourite, and Eternity’s Gate. The critics also give their thoughts on The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Mowgli that are streaming on Netflix.

Green Book directed by Peter Farrelly stars Academy Award® nominee Viggo Mortensen and Academy Award® winner Mahershala Ali in a film from Participant Media and DreamWorks Pictures. When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on “The Green Book” to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger—as well as unexpected humanity and humor—they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

Roma, the most personal project to date from Academy Award®-winning director and writer Alfonso Cuarón, follows Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a young domestic worker for a family in the middle-class neighborhood of Roma in Mexico City. Delivering an artful love letter to the women who raised him, Cuarón draws on his own childhood to create a vivid and emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy amidst political turmoil of the 1970s. Cuarón’s first project since the groundbreaking Gravity in 2013.

The Favourite is the latest from director Yorgos Lanthimos stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. A frail Queen Anne (Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfill her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.

At Eternity’s Gate comes from Academy Award nominee Julian Schnabel. The film is a journey inside the world and mind of a person who, despite skepticism, ridicule and illness, created some of the world’s most beloved and stunning works of art. This is not a forensic biography, but rather scenes based on Vincent van Gogh’s (Willem Dafoe) letters, common agreement about events in his life that present as facts, hearsay, and moments that are just plain invented.

Just found out Roma is going to be in a theater in Lisbon, Portugal. Didn't think it would get any theatrical release in my country. I'm so happy I get to see it on the big screen!

Viggo had his early life in Argentina, and he knows Italian along other 7 lenguajes... so New york accent is spot on.

The Schmoes review of Green Book was actually better.
They acknowledge right away whats not there but hit the nail of what is there which is quite a bit. The film has a lot going for it, especially the ability to include comedy, that by the way wasnt over the top or cringy. Again. Critics criticizing based on what they wanted or expected... not based on what they saw

I'm just madly in love with Scott Mantz, partly because he's a very likeable host, BUT mostly from seeing him moderate several fun Q&A screenings here in L.A. We are on the same boat on Green Book, which I've seen three times as well. And we're both big La La Land fans as well. We both get it. There's nothing wrong with a simple, feelgood movie. And who doesn't love a Christmas movie? Enough said.

Green Book and Mid 90's are two of my Favorite films of the year By far.
My favorite feel good flicks are Ready Player One and Bohemian Rhapsody. And then Infinity War is just something to behold .

Roma is without a doubt the best film of 2018. Of course the other contenders are marvelous but what Cuarón did for Cinema is groundbreaking. It’s such a shame it got such a limited release!

I loved Green Book as much as Scott. I can't wait to see it again. The music in it, never mentioned by any of the panelists, was riveting, and tempered the "white savior" aspect.

I thought Mowgli was much better than the Disney version. I thought the faces of the animals were much better in this version as well, in the Disney one they looked deadpan and didn't show enough emotion. I thought this film was a gem, emotional, beautiful and very visceral. So glad Netflix picked it up.

.I took no offence to the fried chicken scene. Both, Mortensen and Ali represented masterful levels of authenticity in that particular scene. The innocence behind their motives weed out any preconceived prejudices either character might posses. Don Shirley's(Ali) purity, in a sense where the stereotype has no influence. And Tony Vallelonga (Mortensen), blissfully ignorant in his attempts to get Shirley to just enjoy some good food. the scene is so well acted one believes both characters are discovering something new about each other. And it is their innocence that keeps this scene afloat, which is a beneficiary of some good subtle writing.
