He doesn't play Gimli, he is Gimli.

"So you like method acting?"
"Yes, and my method was to kill them with my axe."

As a fan I humbly salute the stunt actors for their sacrifice to bring us a top quality performance

>Legolas, I've killed 2 already!
>bro, we're not filming yet!

I find this hilarious. I can only imagine the stunt guys dreaded those filming days

It's the pause that does it for me. "You come at me and I'll hit you. With my axe."

I'm reminded of a scene at Helm's Deep when Gimli hit an Uruk between the legs

In other words, John Rhys-Davies committed to his role by beating the absolute shit out of his opponents, just as Gimli would do.

John did not play Gimli anymore than Viggo played Aragorn. They actually were those characters.

I’m still so impressed at how the camera tricks you into seeing him as like 4 fr instead his actual size.

Even better, he was about 57 during the time of filming the first movie, and he's 6'1" IRL so I'd be as scared as those stunt guys.

The fact tht he is 185Cm (6Ft) and imagining it is terrifying

John was incredibly uncomfortable in the makeup and got really bad reaction from it (skin breakout). So he was basically incredibly irritable and took it out on then 😂😂

"Wow John, very good acting! Just next time don't hit so hard."
"Acting?"

JRD: "Excuse me, who do I have to talk about sharpening this axe? That last guy I hit actually got up."

I love how they had these big fight scenes planned out and he would just come in swinging without following what they wanted. He fought like a true dwarf and it made the movies so much better.

All the stuntmen from the movie are coming back years later to express their displeasure of being brutally murdered by John on set in this comment section.

I was in high school . Someone was reading the Hobbit and I picked on them. I got curious, started reading, and apologized.

"Try not to hit us, ok? But if you do hit us, that's ok we can take it."

All he heard was, "we can take it."

If you've never watched the behind the scenes and making of LotR, it enhances the movies so much. It's a lot to digest (like 10+ hours of content), but very worth.
