Seoul calls for immediate withdrawal of North Korean troops allegedly in Russia

Seoul has demanded the immediate withdrawal of North Korean troops allegedly in Russia. It has also warned of a response to any acts that could threaten its core interests. The Russian embassy in South Korea has released a statement, saying that cooperation with the North is not directed against the South's security interest. Seoul's spy agency reported on Friday that some 1,500 North Korea troops are already in Russia, and Pyongyang is planning to send about 12,000 more. Megumi Lim reports from Kyiv.

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited North Korea on June 18. He and North Korean leader Kim met and signed a number of agreements, including the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty, which allows both parties to provide assistance to allies. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko stated on October 15 that once North Korea is attacked, Russia will provide assistance, including military assistance, in accordance with this treaty to help North Korea.
