Wormtongue/Ormstuga is actually compliment in Norse saga of Gunnlaugur, where it is epithet of titular character, meaning a beautifully eloquent person or skald. Tolkien knew this, academic as he was, and so Wormtongue's name is like an inside joke. It can either be insult or compliment.
