Why does everyone need to go to college in the first place?
Who will fix the plumbing or the HVAC systems? Who will fix the cars? Who will repair roads and bridges? Who will do the carpentry and dry wall work? Or the myriad of other trades and technical skills needed to keep a modern society operating? Those skills are NOT learned in college.

Higher taxes, haven't watched the video just making a guess

What's worse, going to college for free and paying higher taxes for the rest of your working life, or taking out a loan and living within your means to pay it off in a few years? Emphasis on the "living within your means".

it cost them their country, letting educated midwits think its ok to import the third world and expect their way of life to continue.

Just thinking inside the box here. Maybe there would be less debt if they completed their 4 year degree in 5 years.

Feels like the video cuts at the end all of a sudden. Still very informative though.

If using the term free for paying a tiny fraction over a lifetime instead of a massive lump sum now is the biggest problem with Sweden education system u need to move on to a real issue

I'm French and here only 2% of students in public universities take out loans, because if you're low income you get a stipend for living expenses in addition to not paying the tuition fees, which are 190€ average yearly for a bachelor's degree.
EDIT: this is NOT to say France is wonderful in every way and everyone should do the same. France has plenty of problems, related and unrelated to the higher education system. See the replies for some examples.

There is some key facts missing here. You don't need to take a student loan here in Sweden. You will get about $300(monthly) in student welfare, and on top of that you can choose to take a student loan if you want or need to in order to pay for your housing or whatever. It's a rather misleading video.

I'm from Barbados and our education system is subsided.
We spend 6.7% of our GDP on education.
We are also ranked 12th in the world in highest living standards.
And our population isn't even 300, 000 people yet😔😟

I am a current college student, I would never advocate for "free college", however universities are getting out of hand of how they continuously increase tuition, they're actively trying to make massive amounts of profit, higher education should not be treated with the exact mind set of a giant corporation of how to maximize profits

But missleading to say that uni is not free.

You actually get paid around 350 dollars a month to go to uni. If you live at home during the tlme you study and dont take loans you actually make money going to uni ;)

It is very common in Sweden for young newly graduated highschool students that can't find a job to join a university program just to get money. Tuition is free and you get a small grant per month, around 300USD equivalent and then you are allowed to borrow around another 300USD which you later have to pay back when you start working. Its like an sms loan, super easy way to quickly get cash. Result is that tons of people start studying something they are not interested in just for the "free" money and the partying. After a year when they have failed most of their courses they are not allowed to continue the next year, they quit and are then forced to pay back money, and they still have no job, the one year in uni is worth nothing and your life of living with debt has just started. My class at Uni had 400 ppl enrolling on day one, half were gone in a year and less than 100 finished all 4 years of our program.

Thanks!! These videos are great. I like that you're asking questions about how it works. Too many people think it's "free" but don't understand why, how or if it's really "free"!! Lou what's your new major?? Best wishes
