Schoenberg's "Traumleben" (dreamlife) is a great metaphor for atonal music. A dream is also dissonant, fleeting and hard to remember.

Whether or not a composer organized their pitch material with reference to a tonal center is one thing; whether or not a listener feels or perceives a tonal center is another thing~~

This is more "romantic" as Schubert or Chopin.
Atonality is uninteresting here.

Only counts the utter, desperate and painful emotion.
You cannot find some more pain, sorrow, or vibrating sensation.
Inner torture contemplating only some objects : a tree, a street, a wall in your apartment ....

This has a name : Expressionnismus.

The first composition ever to dispense completely with “tonal” means of organization is clearly Vexation by Erik Satie (1894). And atonal Sonatas and Preludes by Scriabin were contemporary if not a little bit earlier to Schoenberg op. 11.
