Venezuela Says Guyana's Oil-Rich Essequibo is Now Their New State | Vantage with Palki Sharma

Venezuela has escalated tensions with Guyana again. Caracas has unilaterally declared that the disputed region of Essequibo is now a Venezuelan state. Essequibo is an oil-rich region that has been governed by Guyana for the last 200 years. The dispute stretches to before Venezuela and Guyana were independent nations. But it is only now, on the eve of elections, that Venezuela chooses to escalate tensions. Is President Nicolas Maduro doing this for oil, or political gain? Palki Sharma tells you.

As a Guyanese, I appreciate the efforts put into the report and the proper pronunciation for Guyana.

No mapping error. The Essequibo is the Indigenous Peoples territory and every attempt of spanish settlements from the 1600s onwards were met with staunch resistance from the Karinya. Those spanish settlements were wiped out by the Karinya in many instances. Only the Dutch had a foothold in the Essequibo and that was done through trading at first with the varying Indigenous Nations and later on settlements were established. 90% of the Indigenous Peoples population of Guyana lives in the Essequibo Regions and we see ourselves as Guyanese.

If there is enough oil there, the United States might have to get involved.

As a Guyanese I say WE ARE NOT giving up any river, any sea, any land, any oil reserve or Rice Grain that belong to US. We will fight "Usque ad Mortem".
The Almighty God will fight for Guyana's Territories and Borders.

Fifty plus years ago my dad visited the Venezuelan Embassy in Georgetown to request a Venezuelan Passport, seeing he was born in Suddie Essequibo, they denied his claim. Such hypocrites & greed merchants, like they haven't got enough land & resources of their own.

As a Guyanese, we've never heard of any mapping mistake committed by Braitain. Can you provide your source for this historic contention? Venezuela's fundamental claim is based upon the legal doctrine of discovery used by Spain. Where as the Dutch and English follows the more fundamentally sound doctrine of occupation and control. Spain nor Venezuela has ever occupied nor control Essequibo. Historically, Venezuela 's wants to covet Essequibo in order to have a direct access to the Atlantic Ocean which it lacks.

It is rather unfortunate that the current aggressions by Venezuela is being characterised by such a reputable news agency as caused by a mapping error by the British when in the face of international law and the principles which govern state relations the MOST IMPORTANT factor to consider here would be that the two parties agreed to an arbitration which both Venezuela and Guyana agreed will be the FULL, PERFECT, and FINAL settlement to the dispute.

Notably, at the end of the dispute neither party was truly satisfied, since neither got what they originally wanted, BUT BOTH PARTIES ACCEPTED THE ARBITRAL AWARD AS FINAL AND BINDING. This is evidenced by the fact that there was a joint state commission which comprised of Venezuelan and Guyanese representatives who demarcated the settled borders and both Guyana and Venezuela printed maps and accepted those borders for over 60 years until Venezuela UNILATERALLY decided that they would no longer accept the agreement.

That is why we are here… for all the good and bad caused by colonialism, there are rules which we have collectively agreed to be governed by as a global community. Venezuela’s actions are a flagrant violation of those rules and must be continually condemned.

That's the reason why I didn't trust and like that Argyle Declaration where our president met with dictator Maduro in St Vincent! That was a sign of weakness on our part.
