Here is my answer to your questions of synapomorphy:
Here, we assume that 0s are all ancestral and 1s are all derived characters, i.e. appearing later in the evolution of this group of taxa. So, C and D share only one character (eyes), which is also shared by all other taxa, thus having eyes is not a synapomorphy for C and D, but it is a synapomorphy for all the taxa.

Why is it that only A and B have synapomorphies but not D&C, C&A ?

Are synapomorphies identified when all characters are shared except one?

C & D have 4 synapomorphies according to the list. Don't they all have synapomorphies (they all have eyes)?
