Alexei Navalny suggested an approach for monitoring Russia’s corruption in a 2017 interview conducted by Stephen Sackur, the presenter of the BBC’s “Hard Talk” programme.

This video first captures the comments on corruption in Russia made in 2017 by Alexei Navalny. Following the video clip, data on trends in Russian corruption are presented using the approach suggested by Mr Navalny and an assessment is made of Russia’s overall performance in 2012-2023.

Data is provided for a “Russian equivalent” set consisting of the three countries recommended by Mr Navalny (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Zimbabwe) and the three other “stans” which were previously Russian republics, namely Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.

Russia’s CPI score decreased by 7.14% during 2012-2023. In 2012, Russia’s CPI score was placed first equal out of the seven countries included in this study. The country’s CPI score made some minor gains in 2014-2020 but these were all reversed in 2020-2023. In 2023, Russia’s CPI score was placed third equal out of the seven countries evaluated.

The increasing level of corruption in Russia noted by Alexei Navalny in 2017 has continued in subsequent years while five of the “Russian equivalent” countries recorded overall improvements in their CPI scores in 2012-2023. #corruption #alexeinavalny #russia

What about the special interest group sponsoring a certain candidate in the US. Do not cherry pick.
