Organised in partnership with CreativeTech Scotland Gathering at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, this training event held on Friday 22 September 2023 explored the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence in the publishing industry. Looking at real-life case studies, the session delved into the latest research on the use and impact of AI on content creation and engagement.

About the speakers:

Dr Bronwyn Jones is a scholar and practitioner; she splits her time between working as a journalist for the BBC and researching the role of artificial intelligence (AI), algorithms, and automation in news production at the University of Edinburgh. Bronwyn is a Translational Fellow on the Bridging Responsible AI Divides (BRAID) programme, exploring how the arts and humanities can contribute to enabling responsible AI innovation.

Professor Burkhard Schafer studied Theory of Science, Logic, Theoretical Linguistics, Philosophy and Law at the Universities of Mainz, Munich, Florence and Lancaster. His main field of interest is the interaction between law, science and computer technology from doctrinal, comparative and legal-theoretical perspectives. He is co-founder, and served for 12 years as Director, of the SCRIPT Centre for IT and IP law, where his work covers all aspects of technology regulation, from IP law to data protection to e-commerce to e-forensics.

Caroline Parkinson is Director of Creative for the Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI) and works with the Scottish creative and cultural industries to innovate with academia. She developed the EFI plan for developing data-driven innovation within the creative industries and works closely with flagship project – Creative Informatics Cluster. Prior to working with the University she was Director of Film, TV, Music, Creative Industries, Skills & Innovation for Creative Scotland, and prior to that she was Director, Scotland & Northern Ireland for the new sector skills association, Creative & Cultural Skills.
