Compression is bad for your discs right? Running causes compression, so isn't running bad for your discs?

This is a common question we get here at RehabFix and we wanted to answer thoroughly! Running is not "bad" for your low back, but it can be sensitive.

Disc herniations can recover 100% without drugs or surgery through proper rehab. You can get back to running 100% if you struggle with disc issues. Running has actually been shown to improve disc health!

Disc herniations can heal, and in general running is totally safe for low back pain when managed appropriately with the right rehab plan! This is why we help people around the world with low back pain, disc herniations, or sciatica get back to running even better than before!

My answer is no. I used to be a track/cross country runner. I started powerlifting and stopped running. I injured my back and was told light cardio will help bring nutrients to the avascular tissue (or whatever).

He said I could run but doesn’t recommend it. You need low impact, but can run if it doesn’t hurt. I was like bet. Started training for a 5k and that made my back pain worse.

Don’t do something that makes your pain worse. Stop when you feel sharp stabbing pain and feel pain over a 4/10.

I understand that exercise certainly can help PRESERVE and regenerate disc strength, but I am not finding any research showing that discs are strengthened beyond baseline.
Can you provide links to research showing that compression over time makes discs actually strengthen?

I’m playing soccer at a competitive level. At the moment I have a slipped disc. L5 S1. When I play soccer I can do good at times and sometimes I feel fatigue in my pelvis and lower back hurts a bit. Some days I feel good some day I feel bad. Regardless after playing for a long time my but and a bit of hamstrings, perinium and groin area starts aching. I can play solid 25-30 minutes anything beyond that I am looking to get injured. Gets so bad I can’t sleep at night and everything hurts like a train wrecked me.

Had back surgery-wished I did explosive intervals on a bike for nutrient delivery and healing and also wish I did yoga earlier to get the muscles talking again

I haven't the time to look at the studies mentioned, but to me this is missing context. From the sound of it, it doesn't imply that compression is good, but rather that physical activity is good. We already know being obese and having extra weight is bad for your discs, and people who are physically active are usually in a healthier weight percentile...
I almost thought he was encouraging people to run with an injury until 4:55...
