You can just use the Euler-Lagrange equation on the squared space-time interval integrand and get it in like 7 lines, or Ofc use the definition of the covariant derivative of a vector on itself and say that it must still be itself under parallel transport.

This only works if you have an affine parameterization of the surface (the trick simplifying the issue with the square root).

There is another error in Albert Einstein's paper about Mercury. There is an extra term in Einstein's geodesic equation. The extra term contradicts Schwarzschild's geodesic equation.
