As part of the Armenian Assembly of America's Summer Internship Program in Armenia (SIP), interns have the opportunity to meet with interesting people in both Armenia and Artsakh and discuss issues.

Sarkis Balkhian is one of these amazing young man with whom we met. On July 12, 2017, he spoke with our SIP 2017 Interns on a variety of topics. Through the Armenian Assembly of America, in the summer of 2007, Sarkis interned at the Armenian National Institute in Washington, DC, and in 2008, was an Assembly SIP intern, working at both the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute and the Middle East division of the Republic of Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Yerevan.

Currently, he is the Advocacy Director of the Aleppo Compatriotic Charitable Organization, which supports Syrian refugees in Armenia, and a Middle East and North Africa consultant at Human Rights Watch. Sarkis was formerly a Middle East and North Africa Senior Associate at Human Rights Watch’s Washington, DC office and a staff writer at the Armenian Weekly. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Holocaust and Genocide Studies from Clark University and a Master’s degree in International Relations from Yerevan State University.
