How to test & troubleshoot appliance capacitors

Need to learn how to test an appliance capacitor for your refrigerator, washer, dishwasher or microwave? We have you covered! When your capacitor fails it can cause the motor or compressor to not run or your microwave to not heat.

Appliance capacitors come in different shapes and sizes depending on their functions and what appliances they are found in. But they all do the same thing. They store and release electricity.

- Refrigerator run capacitors are commonly used on compressor start relays to help the compressor motor run more efficiently.
- Microwaves use a high voltage capacitor to help supply power to the magnetron.
- Washing machines commonly use a start capacitor on the drive motor to help start the motor or a run capacitor to help the motor to run more efficiently.
- Dishwashers commonly use a run capacitor on the circulation motor to help the motor to run more efficiently.

Super easy to understand. Thanks for going over all the variables. Helpful if you added one more: can a capacitor passes the continuity test but fail the capacitance test?

*if my refrigerator stopped working and won't turn on anymore and keep things cold but the light inside still turns on does that mean it needs a new capacitor? Or a new circuit/motherboard*

if a capacity is bad, how do you properly let it discharge before removing it from the appliance?

When I did a continuity test on my capacitor, I switched the multimeter leads and the multimeter beeped each time, where as when he tested the capacitors he only got one beep after switching the leads. Does my test suggest my capacitor is good or no good?

Hi there ~ fantastic video! I do have a question: I'm testing a run capacitor for a refrigerator and I followed your instructions for testing capacitance (I got readings within the micro farid rating listed on the unit). However, when I attempted to test the continuity, I kept getting OL and no beep. Does that mean the capacitor is bad?

Sir may I ask, if I have a motor starting capacitor for "Dough Mixer" of 80µF 10+20% 270V, and I have a reading of 85µF, shall I say that the capacitor is in excellent condition?
