This Audi Group S Proto features a 2.1-litre 5-cylinder mid-engine which is able to produce 700hp on a car that weights 1000 kg (2,200 lbs) and reach a top speed of 300 km/h. Watch and hear it driving on the hillclimb course!

Group S, when LMP go off road. Btw, Rally1 (and to the some extant, formerly WRC cars) is basically a prototype, with only few resemblance to road car forced by regulation

I always wished the FIA proceeded with Group S even though I wasn’t even alive when they killed off Group B. All of the Group S prototypes are wild

This is one of those cars you are happy to learn that it exists. My thoughts are imagine if they made a road version of this today? Detuned to 250-300 BHP but with the dimensions and appearance identical with only the addition of a rear window. It was created in 1984 and If they made a road version I would want it for the looks alone in 2017. sigh.

It's what is underneath that counts and considering it was built in secret by engineers it looks remarkably complete. It takes many hours and months to refine through hard testing usually before this type of car is ready for racing. And the aim was to harness that known engine into a mid engine format to compete with Lancia and Peugeot and overcome handling limits of the existing Group B Quattro. Imagine what could have been had this been developed further. And even though Group B was cancelled, this technology could have sporned other race cars or even road cars like the R8 only years earlier. Hindsight....
