Woodturning a Square Zebrano Platter with Resin Art

This week, a dried chunk of gorgeous Zebrawood is on the lathe. First though, a resin inlay and an unconventional way to use a hand router for the tricky cuts.

I used a 7/16” x 1/8” straight bit for the router work, and a 5/8” bowl gouge for the vast majority of wood turning.

Ack’s products were used to finish this piece. I’m not sponsored, but I really like the stuff!

Magic sawdust when you were working the corners! Looked like it came out of thin air! Really like this one!

Good morning, Rod! When you hear, "I'm going to make a square platter" on a lathe, well you just have to check that out. Then add a see-through resin flower in the bottom of a really cool piece of wood. Sure enough, that's what I saw happen. Well thought out design and even added some texture. At one point in the video, I saw a red spot showing through the outside edge, just before the tool came into view. I thought, look at that, now he has added a laser to his tool for additional precision. Turns out it was the RPM digital indicator showing through as the corners of the platter rotating by. I feel like I was there watching the entire process. Excellent! Oh, and the freehand router work, wow. We could see through the camera lens but wondered how you could see. God bless & Semper Fi.
