I love Stockhausen's electronic music. There's something ethereal about all of it, very hard to put one's finger on. I first recall being mesmerized by not by Stockhausen's music so much as the titles of his works, long before I ever heard them. I used to sit around the library back in the '70s when I was in high school, and my favorite "reading" was the Schwann record and tape catalogs our library would subscribe to. So, if you looked up Stockhausen in the classical titles, you'd see stuff like "Kontakte", "Mikrophonie", and "Hymnen." Wow. All of these were on Deutsche Grammophon at the time of course, and they seemed so remote and cool and other-worldly somehow. It was enough to fuel a high school kid's imagination for days, believe me. And when I finally got the chance to buy some of those records and listen to them, they were no disappointment. And they still aren't!

Reading Dostoyevsky with this on low volume in the background, it's nice.

I'm just listening to this for the first time and loving it! I've not explored 'Licht' much, but I saw 'Oktophonie' at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival this year and was inspired! Stockhausen is my first love!

People misunderstand Stockhausen; they too readily assume his music will be dissonant. In many ways much of it is more accessible than the music of Schoenberg, for example.
