How to file guitar nut slots Martin d28 nut slot fix nut action repair by Randy Schartiger

How to file nut slots! This Martin has terrible buzzing of the 6th string on the first fret, the rest of the nut is perfect so here I fill the slot with bone powder I've accumulated from sanding bone, one drop of CA glue then file a new slot at proper depth and eliminate buzzing. A brief Q-ball attack and other madness!

Hi Randy, looking at the bridge-pins close up ( around 12:30 ), the black dots on the 3rd and 5th strings don't look right. If the pins are from an " odds and ends " box, I'd say this old bird is getting more love and attention this week than it's ever had before in its long life . Cheers, Nige .

Hi Mr Randy, great job on the nut repair, that's a really great trick to use the bone dust, some super glue and file it to spec. better than having to make a new one and keeps it original too! Wow those pins look like their the wrong size for those pin holes, good thing you have her to give a little TLC. She sounds great....Glad to see Q-ball!!! Hooold Oooon!

Snip off a couple tiny pieces of the 1/16 inch-thick foam Scotch indoor mounting tape to match the height of the nut, stick to both sides of the nut at the slot to be filled, and the dust and CA will be confined to the slot. Use a toothpick to place only as much powder as needed in the slot, and there will be no overflow at either end, and no cured filler to have to tidy up on the front or back of the nut. When the glue sets, just remove the snippets of tape, file the slot, and you're done.

Just got a new martin D35. This may be a dumb question but the nut action is .013 on the high E and .015 on the low E it doesn't buzz, but will it give me trouble down the road??

You know bud, I've done this nut thing a couple of times, and then it occurred to me, but I haven't had a chance to try it. Usually there's enough nut material over the entire top of the nut, that needs to be filed away, that you could probably use the dust from the nut itself with superglue. I'm gonna try it tomorrow:-)

I just found your channel and I do appreciate all of the info. Could you please tell me what would be the correct string clearance for a Sea Gull S6 Original at the 1st fret? I'm using d'addario 0.12 - 0.52 light gauge strings. Or please tell me where I could find the tolarences so that I can get my string height down at the nut, the guy that set this guitar up did it way too high. Thanks for any help. Greg

As always a good video. I don't think those are Martin pegs on that guitar. Martin pegs donot sit down that low. They look like pegs from s cheaper guitar. Did you ever try making nuts from deer antlers? Like the others guy does. Free material like that, lol. You are doing a great job on this guitar. Thank you for sharing.
