For christmas I present you one of the most popular christmas songs. On the picture you see the Striezelmarkt in Dresden. Merry christmas to all!

"O Tannenbaum" (German: "O fir tree", English: “O Christmas Tree”) is a German Christmas song. Based on a traditional folk song, it became associated with the traditional Christmas tree by the early 20th century and sung as a Christmas carol.

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Wie grün sind deine Blätter!
(sometimes also treu - loyal, instead of green)
Du grünst nicht nur zur Sommerzeit,
Nein, auch im Winter, wenn es schneit.
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Wie treu sind deine Blätter!

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Du kannst mir sehr gefallen!
Wie oft hat nicht zur Weihnachtszeit
Ein Baum von dir mich hoch erfreut!
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Du kannst mir sehr gefallen!

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Dein Kleid will mich was lehren:
Die Hoffnung und Beständigkeit
Gibt Mut und Kraft zu jeder Zeit!
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Dein Kleid will mich was lehren!

This will always make me think of my 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Fräble, who was German. We lived in Bethlehem Pennsylvania where so many German immigrants of the Mennonites, Lutherans and the Moravians came too during the 1700s an 1800s, including my parents ancestors. Anyway, I remember at Christmas time she taught us like 15 or 20 Christmas songs in German for us to sing in our Christmas plays that we put on before we were off for the holidays; and I remember we sang them without error. I can't even imagine American kids today in 1st grade being able to learn all those songs in German within the span of a month. She was awesome and I loved having her as my teacher as I learned so much from her; as when I had her in 1988, she was already teaching for over 50 some years. This also makes me remember my 3rd grade teacher when I broke my left arm on the playground which was my writing hand, she was German as well, and I remember telling her I couldn't do my writing assignments because I broke my writing hand, and she said, I don't care, you'll learn to write with your right hand. And to this day, I'm glad she did that, as being ambidextrous was a great skill to have, as it made it easier for sports an musical instruments; today that probably be known as child abuse. Anyway, sorry for the rant, but this was the first song in 1st grade that we learned in German and it poured all those memories from my elementary school back into me.

I am American and am about 30% German. Four years ago I randomly started learning German for fun. I fell in love and took it school for two years. I am not fluent yet but I love embracing my heritage and listening to this music makes me so happy. This is truly beautiful and I wish to learn “O Tannenbaum” this Christmas season.🎄🎄✝

I remember I sang this song in English to my twins in the hallway, my father in law heard me, (this was many years ago), and he immediately went to his grand piano and started playing it and saying the lyrics in German. I think that he liked me more after that day. It was their first Christmas spent with their paternal grandparents. Then he'd go back to the piano and play it again during those days, whenever he wanted me to sing it again. I suppose it had been many years for him, since he heard it sung, and to hear me caused him some excited nostalgia. What are the odds, grandchildren with a US Spaniard mother born in Germany, and two Spaniard grandparents that spoke German? My mother and my father in law, being my mother most willing to speak German at the drop of a hat, including towards him, and he'd just nod but wouldn't say much back in German. Maybe he was afraid his spoken German wasn't as good as hers anymore, but he definitely could read ANYTHING in German, because part of his library section of philosophy books, all books by Hegel are in German. Obviously his favorite German philosopher. I think his second son kept them all.

Thank you Dr. Ludwig. Long has this melody been in my mind, but, as an English speaker, never before have I understood the words. You have enlightened me and made my Christmas that little bit more pleasant. Thank you from Ireland 🇮🇪 🎄👍🙏
