South Africa tornado: Drone video shows damage after twister rips through Durban town

Drone footage taken in the South African town of Tongaat, Durban, on Tuesday, showed damage to homes and infrastructure in the aftermath of a tornado.

Residents of Tongaat are coming to grips with the scale of the destruction. Edwina Vrijmohun, a local teacher, lamented the extensive damage to her home, caused by what she described as a second disaster, after just recovering from floods last year.

"I'm newly married, just renovated after the floods, and this is another disaster for us," Vrijmohun said.

Local media reported that the national weather service had issued a level four warning for heavy rain and possible flooding.

I live in the area of tongaat im dissapointed how heartless some people can be commenting about this being fake an talking about political partys , this is actually terrible an disturbing to see people talk like this when over 1200 peoples homes was destroyed, an ppl killed with a rising count .

I was driving on the freeway from Ballito going to Durban and I have never been so scared in my life. It was like being in a car accident all over again with nothing but panic and adrenaline rush. Luckily I made through but other cars decided to stop on the road and sort of wait it out... This was terrible and can't imagine how these communities survived

Went to Fairbreeze mosque in Tongaat on Tuesday to drop off stuff to be distributed to the people who were left homeless. I cried seeing the damages to homes and the carnage even though clean up crews removed some of the debris. Our community of Isipingo has been donating truckloads full everyday since then and tomorrow we will be going to the vishwaroop temple to donate more items and we will continue to donate in other affected suburbs. My sincerest condolences goes out to the bereaved families of the 11 people who passed away 🙏
I pray strength and recovery to those injured, faith and hope to those who lost their homes and belongings. There are many earth Ångels and we will help you guys as best we can with whatever little we have ourselves. My community has been phenomenal with their contributions pouring in, as with all the other communities throughout KZN and SA who donated, so don't lose hope, whoever is doing their little bit to assist, you all will get back on your feet again 🤗 Jesus is our guiding light and rock and He is working through us to help YOU 🙏
