New sub. Love a coin spill. Got a little garret 250 a few years ago for my son and some beach metal detecting. Lockdown and madness kicked in and could tell that i needed something for better mental health and thought i would give detecting a go .
Have always been interested in WW2 history of my home town Belfast and got my first permission on fields i thought may hold a bit of that history.
I was right i believe and found a number of small crosses and coin spills that match the date.
I can imagine the people who ran to the fields away from the city clutching onto the croses and praying in the dead of night as the Belfast blitz happened and they looked down on a burning city.
Hard describing the connection it gives.
The thing is i was finding other things i was unsure about but stuck them in my backpack and took GPS because im aware of my lack of knowledge and was told taking GPS is a good habit.
Glad i did because one item is a bronze age palstave and the other items appear to be two iron age hammers and a bronze age ring proto currency.
These type of items particularly rare here because we didn't have a large population in Ireland during the bronze age.
Finding them has thrown up some challenges also because of lockdown and my inexperience and the law.
Strict lockdown kicked in a day after i found the items, i had not identified them and when i did i couldn't go see the land owner and show him what i had found and rightly or wrongly i view him under our agreement as the person i should see first before handing over to local authorities such as museum or archaeology department.
Set up a Twitter and reached out online for some advice from archaeology people and was given nothing but links regarding the law and got the impression they had no love for people detecting.
Honestly they didn't help. Im not out looking archaeology and finding it has been accidental.
I don't know how our deeper history can be found without people like myself out in the fields doing the leg work.
Hopefully when i hand these finds over i can get a contact in archaeology who can help me in the future.
I don't wanna be making phone calls and having local authorities coming out to me every time i dig up something i cannot identify and i dont wanna throw things back into the ground lost for ever and possibly damaged by farming.
Sorry for the ramble lol but i just thought i would share in case anyone new into the hobby is looking in the comments.
Doing my best now in learning our more ancient history.
Gonna see my permission owner today and contact appropriate people afterwards. Hopefully it goes well as i try and do the right thing.
