Randall Clark aka The Survivalist | Fallout Lore

Before the Great War, Randall Dean Clark had served with the United States Army and had been one of the many unfortunate souls to have been deployed to annex Canada. While there he witnessed things that no one should have to see, entire families fighting, killing one another for food and soldiers executing those that refused to cooperate. When the killing was done and Canada had been successfully annexed, Clark was sent home, leaving the battlefield behind but also taking his atrocities with him, the nightmares of war forever embedded in his mind.
To escape these memories, Clark found himself wandering into the wilderness to hone his survival skills. For multiple days and sometimes even weeks, Clark would leave his family in Salt Lake City, his wife Charlotte, and his son Alex, who thanks to these frequent excursions would hardly ever see him. The husband and father who had left for the war had returned a stranger, but no matter how many times he would run off into the wilderness, to distract his troubled mind with survival, he always came home. And it was on that fateful day, October 23rd, 2077, as Clark was driving home from his latest bout of survival training, where the world was forever changed.

When I do the final battle of Zion I always like to use his armor and weapon. I like to think of it as the Father’s spirit coming back one last time to protect his children.

Like Joshua Graham, Clark survived because the fire inside him burned brighter than the one around him.

the survivalist was created by john gonzalez, the lead writer who also created most of the FONV base campaign and among many, mr. house. he deserves wider recognition.

This guy's story made _All_ of Honest Hearts worth it for me. Sure, the New Canaanites and White Legs are cool and all, but there's something so melancholic about a mysterious guardian figure protecting people who will never meet him.

The "Forgive me Mama" written on his helmet tells you everything you need to know about the character.

"February 14th
They ate them."

still one of the most haunting things to read from his journal and the emotion in it is just heartbreaking

Dying is easy, but living takes true courage.

Randall Clark was never a coward. He was a good man. A brave man.

Best thing was realising the terminals were of one person and connecting the events then realising he was talking about the sorrows and the last letter was how they named their tribe. Amazing writing 😭

Going from the journal entry of “shes pregnant” to “I buried them” was so completely brutal. I put my hands on my head in distress over something that happened 100+ years previous

I love how Clark ended up taking care of the group of children. He always wanted to raise kids and life said no, but eventually live said yes

Just a few terminal entries, and bits of environmental storytelling created a story as compelling and deep as some of the best survival novels <3

Impressive he could clime the cannons with his massive titanium balls weighing him down

I feel he’s earned the right to be mythologized by the Sorrows. His entire story is a noble one, and it is almost remarkable how he was never discovered or seen by anyone.

Randall Clarke is hands down of the best characters of Fallout. Without being a mutant or a ghoul or an extremist human, just being a real survivor. His gear and loot are amazingly useful but the lore behind it is much better. And the place where he died is one of the best areas to watch the sky and the landscape of Zion Valley. It's...almost biblical

It really is one of the most bittersweet and affecting stories in Fallout. I remember the first time I played Honest Hearts, I found his body after finishing the main questline. I read the last entry, and couldn't help but imagine the Courier saying, "They made it, Randall. The kids made it. You did right."

I just started honest hearts a few days ago and learning about the Survivalist made me wish we had more pseudo legendary figures like him in the universe. He feels like someone who fits perfectly along others like the Chosen one, vault dweller, lone wanderer, or courier.

This mans life story is more detailed than the main quests of newer fallout games, I legit cried at the end

Randall Clark is one of the greatest characters you never meet directly.

Characters like The Survivalist really show how Obsidian can flesh out one of the most interesting stories in the series that you never experience yourself

RIP Clark your story will never be not forgotten
