Good part one John. My lathe stands on Tufnol risers. It's a useful material. We use it at work to make bucks for knocking over sheet metal aircraft parts. Kind regards, Dean in Oxfordshire.

I had a 1956 General Motors Holden car. 138 c. I. 6 cylinder motor. The camshaft timing gear was made of this stuff. The gear would last about 60, 000 miles. The gear was cheap and easy to replace. In those days you spent all day Saturday working on the car just so you could drive it on Sunday. Those were the to Mary Hopkins)!!!

Used to use tufnol for cable supports on the BAe 146. Was told by the machine shop they had to machine it under water, never saw it myself, due to H & S requirements.

I am so sorry to hear about Stick. I remember when your friend got him because I got a pup around the same time. I believe he was only 2 going on 3 years old which is way too young. I wish you, your friend and his family all the best and hope everyone’s hearts heal quickly. Chris

You made it look so easy! Nice work John!

Nice looking end result, and from looking at the ratios I imagine it wouldn't normally be under much strain so a non-metal gear should be more than up to the job.

Great video content John, its a lot easier and quicker to machine than metal gives good precise results as long as your cutters are sharp.
Used this material or similar in the same family for jig making in the past. It is very stable and is not affected by moisture.

That gear looks very much like the input gear on my quick change gear box. My lathe originated from a trade school so that is probably why the fiber gear is there.

Great job John, for every hour of machining, allow 30 minutes for cleaning😨😱.
My Colchester Master 2500 lathe has a Tufnol Carp brand SRBF) intermediate gear, I have saw other Colchester lathes having this.
Many thanks for sharing and best regards from the Black Country.

Never heard of Tufnell but I see the value of a sacrificial gear in the train. Thanks for sharing.

I know the feeling well of agreeing to do something (often against the alarm bells in your head) and then wishing you'd never got out of bed that day by the end lol.

The Myford lathe I had once had Tufnol gears on the tumbler reverse.. I stripped them once and no other damage was done ..Mike in USA..

For your I sit on Rainbows Bridge
And watch over you every day
I try to let you know, with many signs
I never went away
I hear you when you're laughing
And watch you as you sleep
I even place my paws around you
To calm you when you weep
I see you wish the days away
Begging to have me home
So I try again to send you signs
So you know you are not alone
Don't feel guilty that you have life
That is now denied to me
Rainbow Bridge is beautiful
Just you wait and see
So live your life and laugh again
Enjoy yourself be free
Then I know with every breath you take
You'll be taking one for me

Seems like a steel gear and brittle shear pin would last longer and make less of a mess. I don't understand the benefits of using Tufnol in a lathe. Either way, thanks for the great video. The machining principles it taught were very interesting and well explained.

That Bakelite is wicked stuff but it is holds up better than it should against all kinds of stuff.

The Tufnol gear looks and sounds very nice. I have seen this material before but did not know the name.
It machines easily, but as you said and show, it does make a mess.
Dave.
