I have had results using razor blade dipped in paint prep and digging under the gasket a bit at a time, keep dipping the blade. Also single edge razor blade not stanley blade.... a lot sharper and thinner.
Flywheel looks good but be very gentle with the clutch til its bedded in as the skim looks a little rough compared to new or old oem

Hey Matt, from where did you get the silicone hoses? I need to replace mine as well.
Greetings from Germany :)

I use acetone for gaskets, it's not perfect, but it helps the scraping... though if you saturated the gasket with it, then covered it in saran wrap, it would probably do more of the job for you.

May as well change fuel line while engine is out or gunna be ball ache down the line. Might be usable now but within time will need replacing, keep up the good work inspired me to work on my mr2 instead of taking to a garage every time I want work done

I wouldn’t screw with a fuel line if rusty, 1 pinhole leak and like you said, exhaust is right there, and that’s why so many mr2’s caught on fire. Anyway, get one fabricated or find a donor. Keep your chin up, your doing a great job!

A gasket scraper tool makes getting old gaskets off much easier. Chemical gasket removal is available too.

i know dry ice are great for removing sound deaden material, might want to give that a try or maybe a heat gun/blow torch?

Yeap, gaskets like that are a nightmare. Dealt with an intake manifold gasket on my '90 Nissan like that. I *had* to use a combination of dremel, wire wheel, and razor blade. No joke, I think I ended up using a small grinding bit on the dremel very carefully for actual results. Still took hours. Chemicals did nothing. It's as if the gasket had fused with the aluminum manifold. After I got the gasket off I think I basically block sanded the surface with a fine grit to try and get as flat and smooth a surface as I could. Turned out well. That fuel line should definitely get replaced. Unfortunately, working on old cars and doing it right takes forever.

Ah man, I've got one of those fuel lines chillin in the spares tub... on the other side of the world from you 🤔

One of those days that beats you down, at least you've got a cool shirt! Keep at it.

You are way to nice to the gasket. Get a wire wheel for in a drill and lean in to it. I’ve used them on 80y old and nearly new castings without any problem. A decent metal scraper will do the job as well.

3M makes wheels (Roloc) specifically engineered to remove gaskets without harming the aluminum. Also, get a holder for the razor blade. This will give you much better control and allow you apply pressure; much safer too. Replace that fuel line now. Is the parts car still available that you got your tranny from?

What about acetone to remove the gasket?

Looking at the fuel line, I think that quite a bit has rusted away looking at the diameter when you panned over it. I would replace it. You have the engine out, now is the time to do it. Sure you might not make your deadline, but that is better than at best case, having to remove the engine again to replace it, worse case, you burn the car up.

I am not sure, but could metal brake line be used for fuel line??? If so a brake shop could bend you that length. Then make your own tabs to hold it in.

Way to give it to that non focusing camera! :-D

I suspect you really know the answer regarding that fuel pipe. It's done, there's no way on earth that would pass the MoT test if it was in a position visible to the tester. Because of the inaccessible position of it with the engine in now is the right time to replace it. You may not need to get a replacement from Toyota though, a lot of garages should be able to make up a replacement for that in a much more corrosion-resistant copper-based fuel line. If you do get another steel item from Toyota then make sure you rust protect it thoroughly before installing it so you know that the new part will last a lot longer than the original did...

I would replace the fuel line. Especially since you have it off.

You scrapin with a razor blade was like nails on a chalk board, i use those razor blades but at an angle, maybe 45 degress, make sure ya got plenty new ones and be quick to swap em out if they get gouges on em, take black elec tape an inch long and double or triple up the thickness of the tape and put that on the backside of the razor so it dont hurt yr fingers, then as yr pushin the blade move it side to side so yr literally cutting the gasket off the aluminum, spread the razor over the mating surface so yr only removing the gasket material, shouldnt take you more than an hr using this technique, any longer and yr doin it wrong, i woulda just changed the seal, usually this black gasket material dont leak, and if the gaskets intack when ya take it off, maybe just a skim coat of ultra grey and reuse the gasket?

Focus you fkuc. Lol. So many little details. But now is the best time go get em sorted. Do it once do it right. Don't get too frustrated with the lack of progress. It's just a part of the game. Great content so far. Maybe you could try one of those online MR2 specialists or a breakers yard for a used fuel line that isn't too knackered? I see MR2-Ben in the UK has that fuel line on its website.
