How to Create a Watercolor Painting of Koi Fish

Here is a step-by-step watercolor of some koi fish.

Watercolor is perfect for capturing the translucent beauty of these fish.

I started with a light sketch for the general composition. The sketch was particularly important for blocking out areas where I wanted to keep the whiteness of the paper. I then outlined with a purple watercolor pencil varying the line strength— I use the purple knowing it is a nice cool tone compliment to the orange of the koi fish. I then use various watercolor techniques, including painting wet on wet. I also used black india ink for the water, mixed with a dark blue watercolor paint. The final touches were made with my Micron pen along with dry on dry technique with some white watercolor paint.
