The bohi English term for those who want to know is the fuller. The bohi, or fuller is either ground or tapped into the strongest point of the blade, the spine for katana, or the centre length of the blade on European blades, and the excess is cut out and reused for future blade billets (the steel casing to forge blade steel, usually resulting in Damascus)

The fuller is both for weight reduction and strengthening the cross section of a blade. The fuller adds an affect similar to I beams, where suddenly the material is less prone to bending because of how the stress is distributed.
