This was an huge issue of me. I had a ton of cr4cked plugins and they were like the top ones, phaseplant, serum, Europa, waves plugins, you name It. But i never felt like i was really digging into any of those plugins because I had such a HUGE number of plugins (~130-ish instruments and easy ~200+ fx) that i always switched plugins in every track. One day i decided its enough and i deleted every 3d party plugin i had and used just stock plugins. I never had such a fun, when you are limited to certain things, you really have to get creative. To have a better workflow i made a list of "things i cant do with my stock plugins" and got like 4 3d party instruments and maybe 10 3d party FX plugins. My workflow is like never before and i get to know my programs and make presets, know the sweet spots etc. I recommend It to you aswell.

! I literally have such problem! I'm a hobbyist and for the final projects, I've never used each of them more than 10 times.

One thing I’ve been doing in my projects is set some rules about what kind of plugins I use (or not use) in an effort to get to know what I’ve acquired over the years.

So so true. VSTs, especially freebies, are addictive. I mean, do I really need a new compressor VST, especially as I still haven't worked out properly how to hear or use compression? But "Oooooh, free!" ;-)

Facing precisely this issue right now, I just trimmed my usable list down to about 100, next target is 60, then 30, then hopefully a core set of go to applications that I will rely on most of the time. The problem is by the time I've done that I will have added 20 or 30 more. So it goes... :-)

I end up spending more time playing around with plug-ins than I do recording music 🙄

I must say I had this issue before, right now I have a favourite set which mainly consists of plugins that aren't cpu intensive. Though I have a basic toolkit (9 reverbs, 6 delays, 5 compressors, 4 limiters, 3 amps, 5 eqs, 5 samplers, 4 synths, 4 drum/drum machines) I'm still thrilled to try out new stuff, especially for guitar (where I'm looking for some cool multi-fx to make it weirder). I'm also looking for a cool and simpler one-shot sampler. But overall it is true, a lot of vsts are just too much (especially the airwindows bundle, which is great but comes with way too many of them).

Good point! And yes, my vst folder is getting too hard to handle.

Recently bought a new computer, I'm sticking with my go-to VSTs. Except, if I need something very specific. Good video

Actually more plugins help me. For my last single, on vocals I used waves dbx160 comp. People mostly recommend it for drums but believe me or not it sounded way better on that particular song on my vocals than other compressor plugins. I don't say you should buy 300 different compressors. But my waves bundle with 10-15 different compressors inspire me a lot while I mix.

However, it's just my personal opinion. If you can make everything sound great with your stock compressor then go for it. There aren't any rules at making music

I have the same problem, too many plugins. Although I still seek out new plugins but now I'm more particular about downloading new ones. I usually stick to core group for recording and mastering.

You are really right, at first I tried to get as more free VSTs I can. It is organised, but the when a new plugin in installed it is not shown in the browser when searched. Anyways nice video.

I have done this with my synths and have a favorite folder. Only problem is that when I picked my favorites I ended up with 95% av all the synths even though I actually only use like 10%. "face palm"

I totally agree with what you've said, I'm just commenting to say,
Nice Seque! 😁

I've started going through folders every month and moving plug-ins I have either never or rarely use into a folder on an outboard drive not that it helps all that much as new freebies keep turning up. lol

Exactly my problem right now, even worse as i'm just getting started & trying to figure out which are the best/most suitable to be included into my "core" set.

I feel as if i need to experiment with ALL of them to figure the best ones to even start committing to any, but have neither the time nor energy for such a massive task! >.<

Who needs 100 compressors when you can use 2 or 3 for all siuations? 😝

In Reaper, I can make my own folders. I have different categories & all of my favorite plugins are in those folders. No forgetting, no trouble finding them. I do like to buy plugins. I have gone a bit overboard.

I hunted down plugins like crazy when I started, then settled on a set. I will use a new organ VST on my current piece and have a different distortion for the one after
...
But I feel Im pretty much done.

I want to improve my singing so I can dial back my compressor... Im at a point of learning my gear really. I'm sure there is far better stuff out there (I use POD studio's spring reverb for example) but I have a long list of songs to get to, and have written 2 in the process of recording my current one... I need my gear under control, I have a job and play everything so I'm already short on the sleep hours department as it is.
