Also, I believe if the skulls closer to the king are still up when the team on that side takes their turn, they can treat its position as their new baseline (until the opponents eventually knock it over, at which point it’s removed from play)

What are skulls? It cant be the square batons because you said 5 on either side, and you had 6. Are the skulls also the baseline?
