Texas Republicans at odds over Gov. Abbott's proposal to completely eliminate property taxes

It’s unconstitutional anyways. You can only tax based on income and have to get the okay through Congress. Since when is owning a house your’e living in considered income?

I don’t mind paying property tax on what i PAID for my home, not on what someone perceives the value to be. I don’t plan on selling my home but I’m taxed on double what I paid for it

I work in mortgage and it’s the investment firms artificially driving up property values that is causing the increase in property taxes. They do it intentionally because it makes it worth more in their assets portfolio. That’s why they’ll pay 100k over listing price for a 3 bedroom

The only reason they are bringing this up is because corporations and investors own about 50% or more of the properties in Texas.

Well, actually, if they eliminate the states property taxes they will need to raise taxes elsewhere. Expect the sales tax to go up big time.
It should be mentioned that cutting property taxes will lower the total tax burden of wealthy Texans but increase the tax burden on middle and lower income Texans -- and that is Abbott's intention!

As more and more of our housing supply gets eaten up by corporations, those corporations will be lobbying harder and harder to eliminate their need to pay properly taxes. How about eliminating or reducing property taxes on primary residence only and the older you are and longer you have owned your house the less you pay?

Money has to come from somewhere to fund their spending. The states that have low income taxes have high property taxes. The states that have low property taxes have higher income and sales taxes. Texas eliminating property taxes just means they will have to raise other forms of taxes.

A year before I bought my house (2019) it was worth $165K. This year, the city tells me that it's worth $311K. The county tries to raise the value of my house by 50-60K every year I've lived here ( and yes, I protest every year). None of the money comes back to my neighborhood, and all I get for it are potholes and crappy roads, a non-existent police presence and a nagging certainty that the idea of private property ownership in this country is a damn joke.
