So 14/hr and still have to cover gas, maintenance, etc. And they know if you click that its time to assign every no tip order. Anyone opting in should just throw in the towel and apply at Wendy's. Would literally be more profitable.

What door dash needs to do is pay people $2 extra for 20 minutes waits because if we decline we get a bad rating & don’t get pay all that waiting . They need to make it make sense .

I once waited 25 minutes waiting for an order and still had to drive 15 minutes to deliver. That’s 40 minutes I could’ve been getting paid had I chose this option. Sometimes it may be beneficial I think. I’ll have to try it out. Thanks for explaining it so clearly!

I think the hourly pay would be better if it had10 minutes of buffer time. example: you complete an order, you still get paid for the next ten minutes while waiting for an order or while you travel back into your market if you had to travel some distance from it.

Basically getting punished for being a fast delivery driver

I make more money doing earn by time than earn by pay. I usually make $100 in 4 or 4 and half hrs and my tips are usually $5-$12. I’ll always go with earn by time

Pedro nailed the earn-by-hour reasoning, to get dashers to deliver subpar orders from places that are slow and dashers don't want to do. I tried it yesterday for a couple of hours on the advice of another local dasher. It was just okay. Definitely going to try again, I did not have a single shop and deliver which is rare, I do not like to do them like I have been getting latlely.

I travel with my full time job and use Door dash all over the country to supplement my salary. Just saw this in Charlotte NC for $8 an hour thanks for the tips!

I tried the by time feature in Dallas Texas. Not worth it. First it's only $8 an hour. And what you're saying makes sense because all the orders I took this morning were god-awful. One didn't even tip at all! It definitely seems that this is what the pay by time feature was designed for, to basically get dashers to take orders they would normally turn away.

Dashers who decide to earn by time should milk their time. They should position themselves so that they get the orders from places that take awhile to give Dashers the order, avoid parking right outside the pickup location (so maybe the second or third row back), double check the orders even when they don't need to, take the slowest routes to both the pickup and drop-off locations, take the elevator instead of the stairs, and walk at a comfortable speed (no speed walking or running).

So I only do pay by hour around 11:30 to 2 am. Where Im located, by 11pm, most restaurants are closed and it’s really just fast food restaurants open, meaning extremely long lines. Easily a 25-30 min wait plus the time it takes to get to the drop off location. If I’m going to be able to do one MAYBE two deliveries in an hour, might as well get the most from it 😇 I definitely take my sweet time and always let the customer know as soon as I get to the spot that the line is super long and it’s moving very slow to avoid bad ratings. Thats the only time I see that it’s beneficial. Also we all know people who order from fast food chains very rarely tip 😖 Once the traffic dies down, I end the dash and jump right back to the original pay by order.

The Earn-by-Time feature recently hit here in Middle TN at $11.75/hr
Tried it for a few hours and I think I prefer it since I'm in a smaller town where a lot of orders will be a long distance away, so being paid by the hour is a benefit. The base pay in the Earn-by-Order option was way too low for the distance.

I’ve been using earn by time late night and raking in the 💰. My market has been bulking it up with 5/6$ peak pay on top of a 15/hr base. 4&5 mile orders are paying out $18-22 with tips. Being stuck in DT lines and driving the speed limit are 👌🏼 in this mode. Just communicate w the customer and let them know what’s going on, they’re generally just happy someone is bringing them food that late at night.

My app states "tips will be lower on these orders, so the hourly rate will factor that in."

So they will literally be funneling all the No/Lo Tips to hourly drivers. You'd be lucky to cash out $5/an order while the earn by order drivers get a larger pool to cherry-pick the bigger tippers.

I just did one order at $15 a hour and the delivery was 35 minutes away, customer called me when I was almost there and changed the delivery address, I get there finally after 45 minutes and only got $12 with no tip, now I’m in the middle of the city an hour away from my house in rush hour traffic, it’s not worth it guys

It's not a bad thing in slower markets like where I deliver. I've used it one day and actually I made an average of almost $20/hr but then went cold on orders. I would imagine the market was flooded with more drivers because of this. I'm just outside Knoxville Tennessee.
