Why wasn't it widely adopted - because manufacturers liked forcing people to buy their HMI's that went with the plc's and only communicated via their protocol. Customers have now woken up to the fact that Multi Protocol PLC's exist now and they are not stuck with the standard way of practice. It was almost like a monopoly until Emerson finally broke the mould.

Thanks for this interesting talk. I have a question looking at OPC servers. Why do so few companies seem to have configured the OPC UA functionality provided in their OPC server? Everything at that level still seems to run on OPC DA. I know in some cases the OPC UA functions are licensed separately. Are there other reasons in your opinion?

Why is it that German industry supports OPC UA - and standards in general, but the American industry doesn't? Because the vendor lock in brings more money to the companies.
