I'm not even capping there is something that every 2000s striker had that standout ability that this generation lacks

Kevin Phillips won the European golden boot in 99/00. This was for Sunderland, who finished 7th in the premier league and weren’t in Europe, with mostly a championship standard side. He out scored all of those in the video. That’s like Chris Wood winning it today.

Davor Šuker was quite underrated. As a Croat I remember 2018 very well, but people often take the 1998 World Cup for granted. Šuker was that guy at the World Cup with 6 goals in 6 games. At Sevilla he was putting up world class numbers for years and was so good he got a pitch invasion at his last game before transferring. There’s plenty more but those the most memorable.

Serie A probably had some of world class strikers in late 90s/2000s, at least in all of each 20 teams.

I feel like Lewandowski was (and, when at full-fitness, still is) an example of a pure-striker in the generation just before the current one we have now. A guy with insane attacking instinct, always finding himself where needed, almost always immune to the offside trap due to his insane ability to read defender's intentions. A guy who finishes in 1-3 touches most of the time, no more, no less. Haaland is definitely efficient, but he just doesn't bring the same vibe in my opinion. There's still that modern number 9 aspect in him, as well as Kane.

His absurd stats aside, BvB Lewy was a gem so few people got to see live or in-person. His 19/20 and 20/21 seasons were also so reminiscent of classic number 9s imo (although he did play a heavy role of a playmaker in those i suppose). Either way, this guy is probably gonna be one of the last pure 9's that we will see for a while. It's a shame he gets so little recognition, even the lack of mention in him in this video speaks volume of that fact.

Torres- The headband. Long sleeves. Total 90s. The game was over before it started.n
Idea to help with the 2010s video: Michu. He was insane

Another monster is Christian Vieri from the stretch of 97/98-04/05 he had incredible even with crippling injuries
97/98 - 32gp 29g
98/99 - 28gp 14g
99/00 - 25gp 18g
00/01 - 32gp 19g
01/02 - 28gp 25g
02/03 - 37gp 27g
03/04 - 32gp 17g
04/05 - 36gp 17g

And these were seasons where he was blighted by injury yet when he played he was monstrous for Internazionale. We essentially went to the 2006 World Cup without our best striker in Vieri and a retiring Maldini.

Michael Owen got me, an American, to fall in love with the game. He’s the same age as I am, so it was exciting seeing him do so well in the 1998 World Cup at just 18. I’ve supported Liverpool ever since!

He spent little time in Europe, but you should check out Martin Palermo's career. He played mainly for Boca Juniors back in Argentina and he scored over 220 goals in his time there, a freak of nature indeed, specially given the weird nature of some of his goals.

Batistuta was from an era when i used to think of footballers like him to be the modern equivalent to the ancient greek heroes. Just a magical time to watch football. Batistuta, Ronaldo, vieri, salas, shearer, van nistelrooy, and so many others. Pure magic ✨

Batistuta never gets the love he deserves, was the golden boot winner or there about nearly every season playing in the best league in the world at the time against some of the most legendary and best defenders of all time.

Had he moved to a bigger club then fiorentina early on to say a Barca or Madrid etc… he would be talked about in the same goal scoring levels as Ronaldo.

90s strikers were always so outstanding, 2000s aswell, the long hair, the long baggy sleeves and jerseys, flowing like water on the field and being tough af
