Rickey Henderson, famously known as the Man of Steal, is widely regarded as the greatest leadoff hitter of all-time. His 25-year career saw him break numerous records, thanks to his blazing speed and disciplined approach at the plate. Despite opponents knowing he would steal at every opportunity, they were often powerless to stop him from swiping 2nd and 3rd base. An Oakland icon and fan favorite, Rickey’s swagger ignited a revolution in the game, showcasing a flair many players were too shy to embrace. His confidence and unique style, including the way Rickey talked about Rickey, set him apart from the rest. Thank you for the suggestions, and make sure to comment on who you want to see next. To me, the most impressive thing about Rickey Henderson is the walks. Whereas pitches walked Bonds because they were trying to avoid giving him anything to hit, pitchers actively tried NOT to walk Henderson because of his stolen base acumen, but he walked anyway. A Rickey walk involved him working the count and fouling off a bunch of pitches, he truly earned his way on base.

The best Ricky quote ever was when he got on the Padres bus for the first time. Steve Finley got out of the front seat when Ricky got on the bus and said, “The front seat is yours Ricky. You have tenure.”

Ricky refused the seat and said, “Tenure??? Naw! Ricky got at least Fitteenyear!”, and kept walking to the back of the bus.

😂

That story about the million dollar check is so funny. The team was like “yeah we need you to cash that if you dont mind” lmao

Supposedly on the Mets team bus, Rickey got in an engaging conversation with Willie Randolph and at one point said “Rickey likes you, what’s your name?” to which Randolph responded “I’m Willie Randolph, we played together in New York for several seasons.”

my all time favorite player to watch. I had every baseball card of his, would cut out his box scores and bought all his magazines. Never a dull moment watching him play!

I’m a Giants fan but, living in the Bay Area, I got to watch a ton of Ricky on the local A’s affiliate. I hated the A’s but would watch their games just to see him in his prime. His numbers, as crazy as they are, don’t even do him justice. If you didn’t get to watch prime Ricky, I’ll put it to you this way: I’ve been watching baseball for 40+ years, and the only player I have ever seen play that was more disruptive to the other team’s pitching staff and manager than Ricky was Barry Bonds. End of story. The man was an absolute menace and so distracting if he was on base that he probably added 30 points to the batting averages of the 3 players batting behind him. Barry did that for the 2 guys hitting in front of him and the 2 guys hitting behind him. The fear of walking Ricky was such that pitchers frequently preferred serving up BP in 3 ball counts rather than walk him and he could do damage with those. If he walked he had total control of the game. The pitcher probably couldn’t remember who was even at the plate most of the time. It was insane to watch. I’ve never seen anything like it since. Ricky is one of one.

As a kid, I would go to the games and in Oakland and sit in the bleacher seats watching these great players. Rickey was on another level. Rickey played well into his 50s in Mexican league and was fun to watch at that age too. Ricky be Ricky.

Hey Cam another stellar video! Could you possibly do Jim Thome next? Imo one of the most underrated bats in the mid 90's and early 2000's.

Grew up watching him play in the 90's and early 2000's and when it was all said and done I thought he belonged in a select club of player who deserves 100% of the HOF vote. Ricky is the man!

Along with Cal Ripken Jr's consecutive game record, I seriously think Rickey's SB records are the only other ones that will never be broken without vast changes to the game
