NERD NEXUS: Mathematical Platonism, Preliminaries for Information Theory and Intelligent Design

Does a bird have a navigation system? A navigation system is a platonic form. Is it appropriate to describe biology beyond
the language of mere chemistry and physics, and use the language of platonic forms like "navigation system", "signalling system", "decoding system" etc.?

Philosophy teacher Danny and molecular biophysics research assistant Salvador Cordova talk about mathematical platonism as a precursor to understanding Information Theory and Intelligent Design.

Danny surveys the historical development of platonism in the field of mathematics and argues that the numbers like 7 have an existence independent of human minds. Furthermore, the 7 is a prime number, and it would have properties such as "primeness" independent of human minds as well!

Transmission of the information is fundamentally the transmission of numbers (like binary 0's and 1's). It is operationally efficient to use the language of platonic forms to describe information and function. It's sensible to treat numbers (and therefore information and function) as transcendent from the physical world.

This discussion will focus mostly on mathematical platonism, and this will form a preliminary basis for discussing coding and information theory, Shannon entropy, Shannon's theorem, thermodynamics, intelligent design vs. evolutionism.

Danny cites great philosophers like Frege and even the atheist/agnostic Bertrand Russell who were platonists. Sal cites various top Nobel Prize-winning scientists like Penrose and Wigner who were platonists.

Sal was somewhat discontent with the sloppy and not-so-rigorous language that ID and creation proponents are using to argue design, and he is having this discussion to advocate more rigorous language. Saying "DNA is information" or "DNA is a code" invites needless arguments. Why make sloppy arguments that can be shot down with rhetorical questions like: "Are telomeres and centromeres (made of DNA) codes? NO!!!"

DNA is not a code any more than software is the same thing as hardware, at least conceptually speaking.

Sal advocates avoiding philosophical arguments that likely have no formal resolution by mere mortals, but points out the philosophically incoherent approach of evolutionism. He also mentions in passing the "free will" in mathematics may be a platonic form. He specifically cites Riemman's Theorem for conditionally convergent infinite series where the way one wishes to perceive the series affects the sum of the series!

Finally, at the beginning of the show, Sal points out that parents of teenagers are referring each other and their children to Sal's channel. Participants are expected to have higher standards of conduct on his channel than what goes on in other channels in light of the age groups and demographic that benefit from this channel.
