So it turns out that I was wrong in the first video, the gears are damaged, I talk through what I believe happened. I also go through how I shimmed the axles and have managed taken out the huge amount of play in the standard setup.

Hope this information proves useful to you!

Chapters:
00:00 - Intro
00:14 - What happened & I show you the damage
01:45 - How to stop play in small gear in the axle
05:08 - How to stop sideways play in the axle

Thanks for watching, thanks for your support.

That bearing mod does seem to do the job, the play you have now is perfect and will be interesting to how this lasts. That old gear was well knackered.

Great bench video. You are getting good at these type of videos. I'm getting, as you would say, "jelly" of you.
All kidding aside, this was really good info. I am going to start paying more attention to the fit and use of shims that is for sure.
Thanks
Steve

Interesting stuff, you've got those well figured out now. The pinion must have been meshing in too hard and wearing - missing shims on the outside would only allow inward travel. I had a different problem (pinion twisting away from the ring gear thanks to knackered bearings) and the wear pattern did look a bit different. I didn't get those splayed out bits at the bottom of each tooth, and the teeth themselves were smeared over into hooks. At least now I've seen this I might be able to diagnose what's wrong next time! 👍
