The way they talk about this fight, you'd think boxing was not a contact sport.

She should sue every outlet for slander that doesn't say "allegedly".

People who were mocking women's boxing all their lives are now suddenly there to defend it from something that isn't even true.

If she failed the “gender tests” in 2023 at New Delhi why did they wait for her to get to the semifinals to disqualify her? They disqualified her only after she beat a previously undefeated Russian boxer.

they don't even know that you'd probably be crucified in algeria for even trying to be trans or anything like it

At work my co-worker was describing how brutally she was beaten this morning, "He was hitting her over and over again. In the face! Blood everywhere." I was honestly a little heated listening to him, believed him because we chat so frequently. When I watched the actual video of the fight I was so confused. He said it was like a MMA fight. I thought I watched the wrong match. Kept searching for the REAL Olympic match. It was just too normal of a boxing match and there absolutely wasn't blood everywhere. This whole thing is such a heartbreaking mess. I'm glad she knew her limits and pulled out. Shame she didn't do it with more dignity. Imane Khelif deserves so much more respect for her accomplishments and I hope the press that condemned her so unfairly puts in the effort to clear her name and showcase who she really is. Her story is why the Olympics can be so inspiring in the first place and I'd rather people know it instead of this dumpster fire.

As an Algerian thanks for your honest take, it's really hard what imane is going through giving the whole world scrutinizing her for something she had no hand on plus it sadden me that she actually comes from a poor small village that knows nothing about the whole gender issues that are discussed in the west and her only goal is to make her family and the Algerian people proud to only end up with her poor dad showing her passport and try to defend his daughter against all this disgusting and vile far right and bunch of people stupid opinions about someone they know nothing about only so they can score points while crushing someone's dreams

OMG THANK YOU
I clocked in immediately because my first thought went “A Muslim country let someone transition and on top of that compete?”
It’s still illegal to be gay there, what made them think they’d let someone transition

I have to confess something really quick,
My parent is one of these transvestigators and it hurts me hearing them go on their rants because I know that if I was a similar position to Imane I know they’d be in the sidelines calling me a man if she didn’t literally give birth to me.

Im a 6’1 muscular cis woman, my father was 6’9 and my mother a mesomorph athlete I’ve always been bigger and stronger than most of the girls in the sports I played.
I say this because i sympathize with masculine women nowadays, the world is acting like if women are bigger and more muscular than expected that we’re men.

This transvestigator stuff has been on the back of my mind since I was competitive swimming when I was 16 (now 19) I live in a very conservative area too, idk I just needed to get this off of my chest.

Kidology, I love your analyses but feel I have to point out that there’s never really been a “sacred divide between professional sports and politics”. Sports have always been openly shaped by politics; everything down to the way we understand science and ourselves is shaped by politics. As Aristotle famously said, “man is a political animal”. People are totally within their rights not to engage with politics but that does not mean political forces and ideas aren’t constantly shaping our lives.

i cant imagine working your entire life towards a specific goal, against all social/political odds, only to get there and for it to be completely overshadowed in controversy and used as a tool for the culture war.

If women don't stand up for other woman in sports. No one will.

I watched the match and am truly at a loss for worlds regarding the disconnect between Twitter and the actual fight. You’d have thought Carini was beaten within an inch of her life. I feel awful for Imane. I also find it so funny how Carini quitting is being uplifted by the same people who attacked Simone Biles for taking a break due to mental health.

This video could be summed up by the fact that transphobia hurts cis women too, and it shows clearly in the Olympics. I don't get what "both sides" has to do with this when one side is running rampantly with disinformation and transphobic attacks calling her a man or a transgender women (which even if she was, I think in that case you'd have to be on two or more years of estrogen to compete in professional sports) while the other side acknowledges that in professional sports, "competitive advantages" are rampant and you can't exactly qualify which is fair or not.

At the end of the day, these social media pundits will find any reasons to diminish her hard work because race and gender identity plays a big role in all this, as much as we might not want it to. We'd have to ask, why aren't male athletes subjected to any gender eligibility tests but women are? It's broken on a systematic level.

All they are doing is making women sports worse they are basically saying only average women can compete. It would be like saying micheal Phelps can't compete his arms and legs are not normal lengths.

It has never existed!

The Algerian boxer is biological female not trans....she is undoubtedly stronger than other females but that doesn't make her male. The Italian opponent was clearly weaker and made disparaging comments after losing her match . She was beaten by 9 other women that no one questioned. Tyson at age 16 was knocking out men 10 yrs older. ..does that make him a freak ...blessed with genetic features which gave him advantages over most opponents. Is that fair ? If it's within the rules then it's acceptable and we applaud the incredible abilities. So the Algerian boxer is no different. I hope she wins the gold medal and celebrate abilities of a superior athlete and female boxer .

I’d argue that politics and sports have always been intertwined. But to this extent, yeah, it’s gotten a lot worse.

if people wanted to have a reasoned conversation about people with this condition and how they are included in sports, that's perfectly legitimate - maybe she should compete in the next weight class up to level the playing field or something like that - but instead they jumped right to calling her a "cheater" and a "man". culture wars are so dumb and they make it impossible to have reasonable discussions about these issues
