The metal in a microwave is a box around the food. Essentially a faraday cage. Its reflecting the microwaves around inside so they don't escape. If you put something with jagged edges in there tho like a metal fork or a metal plate with even tiny scratches the microwaves will bounce around in that area and itll heat up too much.

Wouldn't the reason why is because microwaves are transmitted by two magnetrons, and the way food heats up is by the interfering peeks? (Which is why there is hot spots in your microwave) So like one magnetron putting out a wave couldn't make a interfering peek which wouldn't create heat and just go through fine?

Little metals with smokth edges can work in a microwave. Having a large amount of metal with sharp edges, like a torn piece of aluminum foil, would spark in the mircowave.
