The Cambridge I bought (cxa61) had a similar sound; veiled and congested.
The marantz sounds like a breath of fresh air by comparison

To me Marantz sound signiture is more natural, neutral. Cambridge is more enjoyable for some people. I prefer Marantz for long listening sessions.

So over the past six months I've had the opportunity to try many different brands of amplifiers in my quest to build a great two channel set up. Rega, cambridge audio, denon, Nad, yamaha, marantz, rotel arcam, I mean basically every amp under $1000 that you can imagine.

And at the end of it I realized I liked the Marantz best of all. You have to take it in context because we all hear differently and we all have different taste to go along with it but when I was a kid my dad was into vintage stereo and he would repair things as well. I just remember that vintage amp sound and a lot of what I heard from most companies seems to be that they're trying to emulate high end audiophile sound but on a budget, Marantz though sounds exactly like it used to. Basically I would bet anything that you could take a classic mid 70s Marantz receiver of similar power and between the old and the new you won't be able to tell much of a difference.

I mean some other brands I like as well my second favorite wad the rega brio.

Are you using the analogue signal from the CD player or are we hearing the two different DACs as well?

Thanks for your great channel

Do you consider this Marantz sounds too much brighter than Cambridge or not?

Kind regards

Wow I own the Marantz amp & cd player & I was looking at the Cambridge but glad I made the right decision. This was useful. Considering the Marantz is half the price of the Cambridge, So not a real comparison but makes the Marantz look & sound very special for what it cost.

I am about to buy either a Marantz pm6007 or a Cyrus One. Any views are welcome. I could not decide in the demo room and they both sounded great. Many thanks !

Both very good! but I prefer Marantz 6007 (or 6006 which I’m trying now with kef q350). But the shocking is the price difference. Almost 3 times more for the Cambridge.

I think marantz sounds better (as musicality) also this ca81 is much pricier (here in Greece)! 😊

I don't like Klipsch speakers. But I love my pm6007 and my Sonus Faber speakers.

Don't have the cxa but do have the axa 100 which is half the price .
Plus the 6007 to be honest both great amplifier but the extra power on the Cambridge gives it the edge

I knew that the Marantz PM6007 is a very decent amp, but never thought that the Cambridge CXA81 is so much better. To me, the difference is huge and is worth every penny!
By the way, awful speakers! Nevertheless, great comparison! Thank you very much!

Did you switch on the source direct on both?

Not a fully fair test. PM6007 is a cheaper. If PM8006 and CXA 81 - it would be same price level. And not sure the CXA-81 would win. Only heard PM6007 against 8006 and there is a hugh difference

I use marantz pm-6007 during 3 months. It’s an another sound after vintage 80’s Pioneer :another low frequency, another high frequency.

Female sound was like as if she is singing behind a curtain. When switched to Marantz, curtain opened and female voice came forward.
Marantz sound is more open and rich, more like real life.
I'd much prefer Marantz in this comparison.

The Cambridge Audio CXA-81 wins that contest hands-down, I reckon. The Marantz PM-6007 does sound a wee bit too “bright” –– it’s a very Japanese sound, which is okay if that’s what you like, but I prefer a more Anglo-American sound –– whereas the CXA-81 has a more neutral EQ profile by default. One other critique of the Marantz: it didn’t really handle the top-end treble particularly well. There’s a certain harshness and lack of refinement to it (overall, the Cambridge Audio is way more polished). This is an important consideration for those looking to own a pair of these Klipsch speakers because the horn-loaded tweeter already gives audio playback that sweetness that you’re looking for without needing to pump it with lots of power: in other words, the Klipsch are a better match to the Cambridge Audio than the Marantz (if a transistor-based amplifier is what’s within your price-range) as the final result will be far better balanced. The next addition to my system shall be a Grado Sonata Platinum 3 cartridge for my turntable, which ought to suffice to add some warmth to the audio playback, and in combination with everything else, should result in a lovely smooth listening experience.

Marantz seemed to have better vocals, or more forward- but I listened thru headphones. Of course can’t rely on those alone 😊
