God does this classic song bring back memories from my time in Vietnam. I was a 21 year old Marine Scout Dog handler attached to various infantry units in the 1st Marine Division. In between operations we would rest our dogs, and ourselves, at our compound in DaNang. We had a hooch that on occasion served us 3.2 beer every now and a traveling USO Tour would appear. Usually a Filipino band of somewhat dubious talent would put on a show. They always closed with this song. Every time they the chorus of “ we got to get out of this place” we would shouted at the top of our lungs. Many of my friends never got out of this place!
I was lucky. Wounded twice but came home in March of 69.
Enrolled in college, earned two degrees and retired in 2013 after a great career in executive positions in the chemical business.
Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to those days when life was so precious to all of us. God bless my friends who didn’t make it back. I think of them always, and I’ve tried to live my life that would make them proud.
Semper fidelis .

This song requires the singer to put all his heart and soul into it and Eric delivers nicely. No one else could ever do it like he did. To him it was a passionate work of art.

Alan Price on the B-3. All original members. Playing live, no backing tape. Outstanding.

This version was done live. Sullivan didn't usually allow backing tracks. You did what you did, you gave what you got.

Recently started listening intently to this band. There is an obvious reason....it's just good. It was good back then, it is good now, it will always be good.

2023: as a teen I had a lousy part time job in a fast food joint. We quit at 11 pm - and always went out the door together singing this song. Great comradeship, great memories. I wonder where they all are now? Blessings my friends, where ever you are.

This was my theme song the year I retired. I sang this song in my head all day. It sure helped me get through some miserable times. When I left the last day and was pitching stuff in the dumpster, I was singing this song out loud with a huge smile on my face!

If only there was talent like this these days. Sadly not, the best rock/blues vocalist ever.
Change my mind?

This song embodies the 60's generational mindset. So many looked at the life the older generation was living and decided it wasn't the life they wanted.
