Flourishing sometime in the 5th century CE, and probably coming to Sri Lanka from the Indian Subcontinent, Buddhaghosa is the most influential single thinker in the Theravada tradition of southern Buddhism. Examining and systematising the Pali Abhiddama canon, Buddhaghosa dealt with issues of self, mind, and perception.

Is it clear whether he was a determinist?
Because that description sounds like it would attribute even the act of freeing oneself from Samsara as a part of the causal chain. Or does the causal determination not extend that far?
