Mother of All Demos – Keyset and Keyboard

In this video Doug Engelbart shows the 2 of the 3 peripherals he uses in the demo. He focuses mainly on the keyset which is a one-handed keyboard capable of performing almost all the operations of the regular keyboard needed by the system. Something like the one-hand keyboards used in gaming and in assistive technologies.

As a technology company and technology nerds, we have always been fascinated by one of the most pioneering moments in the history of Personal Computers.

On December the 9th, 1968, in San Francisco’s Civic Auditorium, 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗴 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗯𝗮𝗿𝘁 appeared on stage to present to the public the project “A Research Center for Augmenting Human Intellect”.

This groundbreaking presentation came to be known as “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘀”.

It is called "the mother of all demos", because that presentation was a 90-minute demonstration of numerous technological breakthroughs that would ultimately change our everyday lives forever.

That was a turning point in the evolution of Personal Computers, which -we could say- defined the way we use personal computers nowadays.

Out of respect to the 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘀, we, the 𝗧𝗘𝗦𝗧𝟰𝗨 Team, have remastered the original video in 4K resolution, trying to preserve and in some cases enhance the video quality as much as possible.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘀 should not be regarded just as a historic archive for reference, but most importantly as the source of inspiration for the technologies that we all use today.

Unfortunately, there is not even one video on the internet with the correct transcript. On every video we can see the automatic subtitling, which has too many errors.


We think that the “Mother of all Demos” deserves better. That’s why we, the 𝗧𝗘𝗦𝗧𝟰𝗨 Team:

👍We have corrected the draft transcript from various mistakes and misunderstandings. Please let us know if we have missed any.
👍We have also converted the corrected transcript to subtitles and translated it to Greek.
👍We have included both subtitles (English and Greek) to all the "Mother of All Demos" videos.

We have grouped the videos into categories based on major technological achievements that were initiated from this research of Doug Engelbart and his associates.
