What does your city use to divert excess water?

We have something called ‘biopori’ here, aka biopores. It's basically holes in our yard, each hole is about 10-15cm wide and 1m deep, fortified with PVC pipe with many holes to let the rainwater soaks into the soil's deeper layer. We spaced it about 2-3m from each other.

Since I put them, I never have to deal with standing water on my yard. You will be amazed just how much changes can happen from such simple contraption.

Also, they're good as composting bin. Just put dry leaves in some of them, along with some worms. Those ‘clogged’ biopores might not be working efficiently compared to the rest, but you can regularly harvest compost from them (just pull out the entire pipe and put them back after you take the compost).

I’ve just watched another short that explains the pink pipes in Berlin… would you believe that they are drainage to get rid of the excess water? That’s right, if you want to build in Berlin you first have to drain the land. Sounds like the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing!

Same in Dorstfeld-Dortmund, its the lowest point in Dortmund and had several floodings. Afaik its already in use, lets hope it prevents future floodings

We have hole like this in Pittsburgh. I know of one in the North Hills of Pittsburgh near Babcock Blvd. Pittsburgh is a very hilly regent, and flooding occurs, because of the building of shopping mall's large parking lots. These parking lots don't hold rain water. The rain water runs off into the low laying valleys causing flash floods.
These flash floods have killed people in the past.

One thing to do to is just regenerate your soil, improve the soil food web. Adding 1% more carbon to an acre can hold 25, 000 more gallons of 💧 that gets held in the soil and dosent run off, and either helps plants or goes into local water table. You either make your own compost get it from other places, grow and fertilize plants nearby you with urine, wood ash, home made bone meal (product of bone broth if cooked on pressure cooker for 5 hours and crunched up after dried) that is NPK. Because you can litterally use certain bushes as compost plants where you trim and compost trimmings, or you plant cover crops and because live roots litterally release carbon that bacteria and fungi eat which helps soil food web thus cover crops are great thing, and if you litterally can’t grow anything you fertilize and water the weeds because at least those grow and will over time restore the land based on ecological succession model. But even weeds (not scientific term) you can get organic matter in and then work this stuff into the ground without tilling like crazy. Low till, or minimal till. Put the carbon it it. Think of compost coffee grounds wood leaves sticks etc organic matter from anywhere that dosent have pesticides on it, as inputs to your yard and land. Think of it this way, a truly biodiverse healthy soil food web when you walk on it feels squishy and a touch bouncy. That squishy ness is the carbon in the soil. Look up soil food web school on YouTube and syntropic agriculture, regenerative agriculture and permaculture and you will be well on your way. No matter your soil it can be regenerated

We have the same in Dortmund-Dorstfeld (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany)

I thought Berlin was built on a swamp? Wouldn't that mean it has an abundance of water?

But Berlin is built on Swamp land? Cant be that dry if they have to pump water from construction sites to keep them from flooding. Im german btw but i dont live in Berlin.

So, a hole in a swamp in a dry region.

Berlin was built on a wetland... and it's also dry? Berlin literally has pipes that pump water out of the ground to allow construction.

This is what we would call a reservoir

He really thought we needed a demonstration of how water fills up a hole? And he heeded a funnel in order to make the water flow into the glass!?

I'm so confused.

Most likely, it will cause massive ground sinking.
