LED ZEPPELIN 4 / ANALYSIS AND DEMO

This video is part of my series analyzing Bonzo's drumming on all the studio albums. LZ 4 or "untitled" is their best selling album and one of the top 10 albums of all time. I always wished that they would have done a Classic Albums episode for this album. Especially when Andy John's was still alive.

In this video I discuss some of the history behind the recording of the album, and demonstrate the drum grooves and key fills for each song.

Special acknowledgement to Charles Connor, who passed away on July 31, (the day before I started working on this video). He was one of the innovators of Rock and Roll drumming and the "train shuffle beat". RIP.

Thanks for watching and please subscribe !

...and follow us on Instagram, and Facebook.
We have more great video covers on the way!

Man George I really appreciate the time you put into these. The editing between cameras must take a lot of time.

George, man when you were doing the fill at the end of Rock n Roll it took me back to 7th grade. I had what us hippies call a flashback. Your knowledge of Bonham and LZ astounds me. Your timing and musicianship is impeccable. I can't convey enough how much I truly enjoy PFoZ and Bonhamology. As a guitarist I dream of playing with drummers such as yourself. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You should be getting paid from a university for the history and technique you're freely teaching in your videos. Thank you.

What really stands out is When The Levee Breaks. John Bonham's kick drum is so powerful. Thanks for sharing this. Led Zeppelin 4 is a great album. Cheers!

The other day my bass playing neighbor was playing Misty Mountain Hop, but I'd rather live next door to you, George. Listening to you is like isolated Bonham tracks. Terrific vid!

12:28: "The main thing is to get the gist of the feeling. And the feeling has that signature 'Bonham Swing' to it."
George, thank you so much for these videos. I am a casual "sometimes" drummer, but I am a big fan of drummers, generally, and John Bonham is one of my lifetime favorites. (I was born in 1960; I've listening to Led Zeppelin since about 4th grade, 1970). This comment is pretty much for all your videos, but I give it here:
While you are providing dedicated drummers with excellent "how to" instruction, you are also giving us, more casual, engaged "air drummer" listeners with granular insights into the stuff we've been listening to all our music-conscious lives.

The one thing about John Bonham that I came to recognize, from early love to later analysis, is how much SWING Bonham brought to his "hard rock" drumming! Even as I personally moved away from "hard" rock, I retained a deep, deep love for John Bonham. And it is because of what you show in your videos: John Bonham was not a simple "hard rock" drummer! He brought amazing sophistication, from a very young age (See: your video of "Good Times, Bad Times, " as representing John Bonham, age 20, album 1, track 1, making his public debut), and he helped shape Led Zeppelin to be much more than non-fans generally assume.
Your presentation and analysis of his each and every drum stroke is such a great education in music listening and drum theory, George. And I feel really comfortable with your "guesses" as to what he did in the studio (which were not notated contemporaneously), and, even if you don't have a pure objective truth for the particulars, I do believe that you present the bigger Truth as to how it makes sense. For that: Thank you, George.

George, I think misty mountain hop is one of the most under rated songs in terms of bonzo’s drumming. The fills in that song are so powerful and some of my favorite.

And we appreciate all you do, George. In a sea of dross it’s really a breath of fresh air to see such well-produced and incisive content. Not to mention your monster talent and precision, which are a tremendous inspiration to novice drummers like me. Love these videos btw, keep ‘em coming!
