'D3 Never Existed'

Today, some more information came out about Destiny and the Bungie layoffs. One source stating that the codenamed Destiny 3 "Payback" has been cancelled, and another source stating it never existed and was cancelled very early on.

This may just be me, but Payback does sound like a completely new game but not a sequel. It sounds like it was another Destiny game, but it wouldn’t be a mainline game for the current story. Kinda like Borderlands 3 and Tina Tiny’s Wonderland.

It’s like saying back in the 2010’s when a big RPG came out, and articles or players were saying ‘it’s the next Skyrim’. I believe that’s what they meant when Bungie employees referred to Payback as ‘the next Destiny’. The next big live-service project from the studio.
