GCSE Science Chemistry (9-1) - Tests for Gases

In this GCSE science chemistry video we look at the tests for gases oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and chlorine. Learning these tests is crucial for exams as testing gases is a regular question In paper 2.

Gas tests include:
Squeaky pop test for hydrogen
Relight a burning splint in oxygen
Limewater test for Carbon dioxide (made with calcium carbonate - not calcium chloride as I accidentally say in the video)
Litmus test for chlorine

1, Hydrogen: "Pop" sound when taking a flaming splint (matchstick) near the reaction vessel.
2, Oxygen: A "glowing" splint put near the mouth of the reaction vessel, then it will turn out flaming again.
3, Carbon dioxide: Test with lime water, a positive result is turning out a milky solution.
4, Ammonia: Turns red litmus paper to blue.
5, Chlorine: Turns blue litmus paper to red then bleach

nice clear video - great summary pages for each test. Just one correction - at 2'28" you say that marble chip is calcium chloride, when it is calcium carbonate.
