iPhone 4S Death Grip Test

Does its new antenna system have the same issues as the iPhone 4?

After the "death grip" debacle with the iPhone 4, it's only natural to wonder if it carried over to the iPhone 4S as they share the exact same physical design on the exterior. We knew the internals had been moved around some, but would it be enough to eliminate this annoyance of the last generation of the device? We put it to the test and you can find out in the video above.

Did you think the iPhone 4S would have the death grip issue?

@Shackize Seriously? You don't think testing if the next generation phone had the problem was valid?

I like the TechnoBuffalo background. Very nice.

@jon4lakers The phone has 4 gaps in the metal band, right ? So if the iPhone 4 had the problem with the left lower gap, maybe they've re-routed the antenna into another gap, so try holding all of the gaps, just for the hell of it, and see if it drops then.

@DunnoWhatToWriteHere That's because signal will go up and down no matter what. If you noticed, that 1 bar went down right as or before he started the test. Afterward, no bars went down.

@Deadliest0Sin i don't understand exactly but there was a section on a British TV show (QI) where they explained that "nobody knows" what signal bars actually are, something to do with if you have 1 bar of signal, then the call quality is exactly the same as when you have all the bars of signal.

@larry28donnell actually he lost a bar before he started gripping it so it may have been a delayed reaction to a change in signal before

@makke1234 the change of position of the phone causes a difference between the wifi signal from his hand towards the table. Thats why is decreased

@HalfEatenMilk It may have lost one bar but it still has better signal than the 4 does even without touching it. And the death grip means dropped calls and lost signal which doesn't happen with 4S no matter what you do. I have an iPhone 4 and you only need to cover the gap with one finger to lose signal completely. Maybe John's hand isn't that moist - the sensitivity has to do with how moist your hand is.

whats on to the top bar next to the wifi symbol on the iPhone 4S? Haven't ever seen this icon

@landyachtzswitch37 this is true but you have to factor in that the iphon 4 had 3 bars and the iphone 4s had full bars so you have to assume that there is going to be some sort of difference between them

@landyachtzswitch37 its called signal fluctuation its the service provider not the phone when you move it derp

I bought a gel cover for my iPhone, so the deathgrip hasn't been an issue for me in a long time. Frankly, I like the cover so much that I'll probably continue using it for my future 4S too.

Nonetheless, I'm glad that the issue has been resolved.

Where i live we don't have to really bother about the death grip unless you are using 3G data. Ours switch from 3g to 2g when held like that for some time so even when making calls they don't drop the call. You just don't get to use 3g data as much.

hey jon, just a quick question... is the white iphone 4s thicker than the black iphone 4? because i remember when the white iphone 4 was introduced it was a couple mm thicker than the black one, causing some casings to not fit. i just want to know whether they fixed the issue with the iphone 4s, or if it is indeed still thicker. thanks!

@kirtooroohet You just proved my point. It takes the signal strength algorithm several seconds to update. SO if it happened immediately, it was updating from several seconds ago.

@fa1074 He was probably borderline 4/5 bars so that's to be expected. If the 4S had the same death grip issue it would have dropped at least 1 or 2 more bars.

@kirtooroohet It dropped one bar BEFORE he gripped it. It's because signal fluctuates wherever you are. but when he actually gripped it, it didnt drop.

@jon4lakers To be fair the last one didn't really suffer from it either. It's amazing how they made no difference at all to the device yet the "problem" magically vanished over time, and it only seemed to happen for US iPhone users. I've bee unable to successfully recreate this issue on any of the hundreds of iPhone 4's I've tried it on (friends, families, display units in stores etc) here in the UK.

@HaligonianType1 With their fingers? Or their whole hands ?

@plasticbandman13 He was just showcasing. You don't have to hold a tight grip on it. Just hold your phone as normal when making a phone call and note how your ring, middle, or pinky (if you're right handed) is almost always over the exact spot that causes signal loss.

Hell, look up photos of Steve Jobs holding the iPhone 4. In 90% of the photos, his grip would cause signal loss if there is no cover.
