COVID-19 is a medical emergency but also an economic contagion which has triggered a cycle of economic and social impacts. Economists at City-REDI / WM REDI have used their Socio-Economic Impact Model (SEIM-UK) to analyse the West Midlands’ exposure to Covid-19 to help provide insight to inform government policies that intervene accurately and effectively to support the economy and reduce the damage to health and social welfare in poorer communities. City-REDI / WM REDI are sister regional economic research institutes based at the University of Birmingham. We aim to support inclusive economic growth in the West Midlands and across the UK. SEIM-UK is a UK Multi-regional Input-Output model used to provide our analysis on the social and economic impact of Coronavirus in the West Midlands. The model provides detailed, sector and place-sensitive economic analyses to be undertaken to serve the evolving needs of the UK national and sub-national policy-making communities.
