I’m an old timer 70 years old just learning to draw having a blast mostly line and wash. I have lived in RI, MA, WV, CA & MO. Traveled all of North America for work for more than 40 years. I almost never look at comments because they’re almost always reductive. But not being familiar with all the types of paper I thought I would take a look. Saw the comments on pronunciation which is the kind of stuff that makes me crazy. Of coarse I picked up the accent but I understood every word you said. It’s a none issue just rude take a trip to Alabama there I struggled to understand what some of my clients were saying.

Love this subject because i found the other stump material, rubber blenders they are great for pulling pastel and blending it as well. so many shapes. Some to blend color in t paper or just move pastel around to produce hair color mixture wen drawing detailed multiple color drawings, weather they be landscape, portrait or just a picture that needs that little extra help mixing product. The rubber blending tools i found have made a huge difference in how I finish and or create my drawing. hair texture mixing they do it all pick up a set of larger and smaller you will find you use them always to perfect your drawing, however always listen and watch our master do his magic as instructed so you will never lose site of the real deal. Matt I have learned so many techniques from you as well as tips to help me see my way. You are the bomb in my eyes and was the one who kept me focused on my journey to become a better art minded person. love what you teach, I learn from the details. god bless create as you have never put the pencils down you are way to gifted.

Thanks so much!!
Really grateful to have found this! Definitely a lot of key points rarely talked about in other videos!
I use fairly smooth paper for my sketches, and many times I questioned whether I can go without using blending stumps or q-tips, and this video just answered my question! Thanks!

I learnt this early on doing Matts lessons, for my very 1st pet portrait i used a blending stump, I did a 2nd one and didny use it as much, yes they were 2 different dogs but still had very much textured fur. I did his circular motion and I loved the fact that I could do it with my pencil, I enjoyed this fact. I still have blending stumps as I know they have their place but it was just good to know that I didn't always need them. ☺

Perfect! Thank you for this video (and the quirky way you put it together), I found it so useful....now I just need to find a blending stick to try it out - my local art store couldn’t help (rural Tasmania) - going further afield. Cheers 🇦🇺

I honestly drew for almost thirty years, before I found out what those weird looking rolls were for. I occasionally use them today, but I prefer other methods. Q-tips, tissue, & even a piece of soft white or clear rubber.
The rubber blends if used softly, or picks up the graphite if more pressure is used. It's excellent for transitional areas between dark and light, where the transition is not well defined.

I haven't had much training in art, But one art teacher I had would give us a worse grade if we were to blend at all, instead wanting us to use our various pencils to achieve the effect. This was awful for me because at the time I had a tendency to blend a ton. However, I do owe her a nod of gratitude as I became a better artist for it

I use my fingers...dirty fingers. I'm not a realist tho, I like messy. Thanks for this video to introduce drawing tools.

I like using them to add effects to images as well. Like if I need to diffuse some line art because mist or dust is in front of it.

Is this circling stroke also sometimes called scumbling? I heard that in a similar context, I think, about using paint.
