These straw bales and similar structures have been around since the beginning of time.
They keep humans safe from freezing rains and cold weather, as well as predators with large teeth and appetites.
The materials change or adapt from cob, which is clay, sand, and straw, to dirt, and yes, Dung, to lime stucco and many other outer skins for waterproofing.

Stray bale homes can't burn as once covered, there is "no oxygen" for a fire to start or remain started; one just needs to watch the old movie Backdraft, directed by Ron Howard in 1991, with Kurt Russel and Robert DeNiro, to understand this concept.

And no, rodents, such as mice or rats, can't live in it as the straw can't be used can't be used as food.
Actually, mice can live in it, as they can live in anything with holes, such as straw, caves, wood, or even steel structures.
But these critters would still need to come out of hiding to eat edible food, drooped by us untidy humans. I'm sure they love pizza crumbs.

Ive been plastering since the mid 80s clay lump lime etc. But the last few yrs ive been using lime chalk warm coat so light and easy on the arms. Best stuff ever.

I absolutely love this!!!! This is the way people should be living not in sealed boxes because that is not healthy. Your house needs to breathe if it doesn't you will get mold and lime is the answer and I can't wait to try this product. I would love to reproduce this and have someone make this in the U.S. why are we importing everything that is mental. Building this way is the smart because this will last, this is comparable to the old brick and lathe structures of old. I am really impressed being obsessed with this subject.

The closest company that does this is 400 miles away no one in my area does. Me & hubby are building our straw bale & this video is so helpful. All your videos are great. PleAse give more tips for dealing with straw bale. We want it air tight
