In a groundbreaking YouTube video, a new concept is introduced which revolutionizes the father fish method of aquarium keeping by creating a food web . The video proposes a modification: reducing the sand layer to one inch and incorporating a unique addition to the top layer, humic material composed of leaves, sawdust, twigs, and small gravel. This innovative approach enriches the aquarium's ecology, providing a more natural habitat for fish and other aquatic life. By incorporating these organic materials, the aquarium's ecosystem is enhanced, promoting healthier and more vibrant aquatic environments. This video marks a significant shift in a setting up a Father Fish Aquarium.

God’s creation is phenomenal!
I was gifted a 5 gallon aquarium with plants, shrimp and guppies. I was also referred to father fish videos. Having had aquariums most of my life, including a 70 gallon aquarium up until 2015. When I moved, I am now learning how to do a natural aquarium which I’m very excited about! I am currently in the process of getting it set up, which includes the supplement that I ordered. I think I’m gonna be up late tonight looking at an aquarium, who needs a TV lol. I so enjoy father fish’s videos, thank you so much!

Doing deep substrate changed my hobby after 20 years so much. Plants are growing like crazy and my shrimps and fish are spawning like crazy. Thank you father fish for showing me the right way to keep fish.
I recommend to watch his other videos!
Cheers.

This is perfect timing for this video because I need to redo one of my tanks now so I’ll do that with the sand

Ahhh I didn’t know we could put a little gravel on top of the dirt and sand! I have been slowly getting rid of the remaining gravel pieces in my tank because I thought it was bad! This video was so helpful! I only listen to your videos now because other YouTubers drive me nuts the minute they start saying, “Don’t put plant or fish in your tank until it’s cycled.” Seriously?! Plants can’t go in now too? 🤣
I put all my fish in right away with plants and my tank got cycled that way. I don’t have the patience to sit for 3 months to get the ultra perfect parameters. So boring to do that!

Who ever would have thought that nature had worked all this out before, and that we can just use the natural processes. Thank you for continuing to push this lovely natural message, and for bringing me back to the aquarium hobby, which I previously abandoned due to its pushing of artificial sterile unnatural environments for the fish to be forced to live in.

Please write a book. It would fly off the shelves. Im still learning everything you have to teach. Im a beginner and so excited. The things you say make sense. But a book would be such a great legacy! :)

I finally made it onto Reddit, Fishlore, and BettaFish. I've shared not only my soil recipe, but also the benefits of Dirted Planted Deep Substrate setups with tons of photos. I've also sent them here for further research. Thank you for updating your techniques and sharing them with us!

I like using beech leaves. They skeletonize quite fast and create an otherworldly appearance.

Great advice Father Fish. I set up a FF bowl about 3 months ago and it's just settling in and becoming awesome now.

About the only thing I want to make people aware of is I would be careful with using saw dust as it's difficult to know it's source, especially if you just ask someone for saw dust and they give you a bag to use.

Most saw dust is from pine wood which can leach pine oils into the water. If the saw dust hasn't been completely dried, baked and evaporated and you can still smell the wood oils (like pine or birch etc) it will kill off the microbes and micro fauna you're trying to propagate. This is natures defence for trees to fight off infections, I wouldn't use it.

Prepare it well first or just omit it.

Hi there, Father Fish. I love your channel and your videos. I genuinely admire how, even though you're pretty advanced age-wise, you still make amazing videos and seem so comfortable in front of the camera. Now comes my questions. I have a very small, I would say one-gallon aquarium. I thought it was bigger, but it's not. Is it possible for me to have a natural environment inside such a small aquarium I wanna put an inch of earth at the bottom and then an inch of sand maybe some gravel through it because I don't have enough of sand and then I'll try to throw onto that some dead leaves and dead branches as you say. I also want a lot, OK, A lot might be a big word for such a small aquarium, but I want to put in some live plants, and I'll also have a plant growing on top, some sort of an aquaponic little jar that's gonna be drinking the water of the aquarium. I want to put 1 beta and maybe 5 or 6 neons. I'm not sure what they're called, but they have a very bright blue line in them and a red one also, but the blue is like fluorescent, is that a good mix? I also have a few small aquaponic containers that are between eight and 12 ounces. I want to put some plants growing on top, and I would like to throw in a couple of neons. Would that be OK? What kind of bottom should I put in there? Should I also put some earth at the bottom, and then some sand, and then some pieces of leaves? I really hope you get a chance to answer me, I would truly appreciate it. Last question, should I put some sort of conditioner in my tap water before I put in any plants or fish? Thank you very much for your time.

I've just set up a 10 gallons fish tank with my kid, but I missed this tip : mixing leaves with the top sand layer. I've already put two leaves in though, planing to add some more very slowly.
Now I'm thinking : wouldn't it be a good idea to half bury them into the sand ?
Hummm, I will be meditating on that topic.
(We got 5 medaka fishes, water temperature is around 18C - still no food given after 2 days, and waiting)

I'm already hooked to this new hobby !

Im very skeptical and worried about introducing something bad into my system, but I think I may give it a try for myself. I do have a spare 10 gallon. 🤔
